Johann Adam Schmahl was a son of Johann Michael Schmahl. He worked for various organ makers, but after the death of his brother Johann Friedrich (1693-1737) he returned to Heilbronn, where he continued the family workshop. After the death of Johann Adam in 1757, his student Johann Georg Fries (1709-1789) took over the workshop in Heilbronn.
