Johann Michael Hartung was baptized on 16 April 1702 in Schloßvippach near Erfurt. He was already active as an organ maker in his birthplace in 1726. He also died here and was buried on 14 February 1777. His son Johann Friedrich continued the workshop. It is not known when he was born or baptized. This must have been somewhere between 1725 and 1730. Johann Friedrich worked for Thiele in Schloßvippach in 1746. He had no children of his own. It is also unknown when he died.
