Karl Johan Wickman was born on November 27, 1836 in Stora Kopparberg. From 1844 he lived in Falun. In 1858 he started working as a goldsmith in Stockholm. He learned the organ making trade in this city, and in 1874 he went to work for Erik Adolf Setterquist. He became an independent organ builder in Skövde. He died on August 23, 1909.
