Christian Gerhardt (I) was born on January 10, 1858 in Dillhausen, near the city of Limburg/Lahn. As an apprentice he worked for the firms Voigt & Söhne and Johannes Klais. In 1888 he started his own organ factory in Boppard. His sons took over the company in 1919 under the name Gebrüder Gerhardt. Christian died in Boppard on August 11, 1937.
