Johann Sylvester Walpen was a son of the organ builder Johann Martin Walpen. Together with his brothers Josef Ignaz and Wendelin, he continued the family business in Reckingen. Around 1810 he settled in Lucerne. Even before that time he built several organs alone. His son Thomas Sylvester (1802-1857) also came to work in the company and took over after the death of Johann Sylvester in 1837.
