The organ in the Church of Saint Katherine Cree in London was built in 1866 by the firm of Willis & Son. However, the organ case and some of the pipework were taken from the church's previous organ, which was built in 1686 by Bernard "Father" Smith. It had one manual upon completion, and was renovated and expanded by various organ makers during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. As mentioned, Willis rebuilt the organ in the old case with new mechanics, a new keyboard and windchests and a new disposition. The pedal was expanded in 1906 with a Bourdon 16' by T.C. Lewis. In 1923, the firm of Morgan & Smith converted the organ to pneumatics, and a new console was installed. A further extension was carried out in 1945 by the Kingsgate Davidson company. In 1963 Noel Mander carried out an overhaul. Plans for a reconstruction of the Smith organ never went ahead. Ultimately, the organ was completely reconstructed by David Wells in the years 2004-2005 to its 1866 condition.
