- The organ in Gloucester Cathedral has a chaire case from 1579, and a main case by Thomas Harris from 1665. The instrument was rebuilt, expanded and restored by many organ builders. In 1847 Henry Willis built a new organ in the old cases, using old material. It was the first large organ that Willis built. On this organ, with 28 registers and three keyboards, S.S. Wesley was organist for ten years. An expansion followed in 1888, with the number of stops becoming 29 and the manual compass being the same for all manuals. The firm of Harrison & Harrison restored the instrument in 1920. They significantly expanded it to 49 registers.
- A further restoration took place in 1971 by the firm of William Hill and Norman & Beard Ltd. On this occasion a fourth manual was made, and the number of stops was expanded to 55. Advisor on this renovation was Ralph Downes. In the year 2000 the instrument was overhauled by the Nicholson company. They added four ranks to the disposition.
- In 2024, Nicholson started building a new organ in the old cases, using some of the existing material. The new organ will have 91 registers on four manuals and pedal. It is intended to be inaugurated inn 2026.
